How Thermal Blinds and Smart Maintenance Can Keep Your Home Warm and Energy Efficient This Autumn

September always feels like a reset button. Kids head back to school, mornings get that crisp edge, and suddenly you’re thinking about digging out jumpers instead of swimsuits. It’s also the time of year when you notice the house feels a little cooler in the evenings, a little reminder that winters not far away.

The good news is that September gives you the perfect window (pun intended!) to get your home ready for the colder months ahead. With a few smart choices like upgrading blinds or giving your awning some TLC, you can keep things cosy, save on heating bills, and avoid the “why didn’t I sort this earlier?” regret come November.

Why September is the best time to insulate your home

Think of September as the calm before the storm. Heating bills haven’t started climbing yet, but the chill is creeping in. Fortunately, blinds aren’t just about privacy or style. The British Blind and Shutter Association (BBSA) has shown that they can cut heat loss:

  • Cellular blinds: up to 40%
  • Standard roller blinds: up to 13%
  • Roller blinds with side channels: up to 22%
  • Shutters: up to 28%

Not too shabby for something most of us treat as a décor choice! And compared to replacing windows or pumping up loft insulation, blinds are a much more affordable way to make your home warmer this winter.

Are honeycomb blinds good for warmth?

If you want maximum insulation, honeycomb blinds (also called cellular blinds) are a clever option. Their fabric is shaped into little hexagonal “pockets” that trap air. That trapped air creates a barrier between your cold windows and your room, helping to keep heat inside.

In plain English, this means your rooms feel warmer, your heating system doesn’t have to work as hard, and you save money. And because they come in a wide range of styles and colours, you don’t have to sacrifice looks for practicality. With energy costs still high, honeycomb blinds are one of the smartest long-term upgrades you can make.

Do blackout blinds really help with sleep?

When school’s back in session, bedtime routines suddenly matter again but after a summer of late sunsets, that’s easier said than done. Blackout blinds can help, but there’s a difference between blackout fabric and a true blackout system. Fabric blocks most light, but light can still creep in around the edges. A full system like Nightshade seals every gap, creating complete darkness. If your household is struggling with sleep resets this September, blackout blinds might be the easiest fix.

Don’t forget the awning

Blinds handle the indoors, but let’s not forget about what’s hanging outside. If you’ve used your awning all summer, September’s your cue to clean it and store it properly before the damp sets in.

Our golden rule is to never put it away wet. Here’s what you should do instead:

  • Wash it down with mild detergent and water.
  • Let it dry completely in the sun.
  • Retract or store it only when bone dry.
  • Book a service if you spot wear, damage, or it’s been a year since the last check.

One customer skipped the drying step and stored their awning damp. By spring, mould had spread inside the casing, and the repair bill was not pretty. So a little care now saves a lot of money later!

Your Autumn home to-do list

So, how do you put all this into action? Here’s a simple September checklist:

Check your blinds

Are they helping insulate, or just decorative? Consider upgrading to honeycomb blinds before the real chill sets in.

Fix the sleep routine

Install blackout blinds in kids’ rooms. For total darkness, go for a full system like Nightshade.

Sort the awning

Wash, dry, retract, and service. Future-you will thank you in spring.

Think smart about heat

Use blinds as “active insulation.” Open them on sunny days to let warmth in, close them at dusk to trap it.
